Subjects and Predicates

A sentence is a group of words with two main parts: complete subject and complete predicate. With the two components, it expresses a complete thought.

Complete Subject

Complete Predicate

Several pilots from several countries

have vanished in or near the Bermuda triangle.

The subject contains who or what the sentence is about.

The predicate contains what is happening which is the verb.

 

Simple Subjects and Predicates

Complete subject and complete predicate is composed of a group of words or just a word which is important to the sentence.

Simple subject - is the important noun or pronoun that cannot be left out of the complete subject.

Simple Predicate - is the important verb or verb phrase that cannot be also left out of the complete predicate.

example:

                simple subject       simple predicate

Five of his friends    |    went to the cinema.

        complete subject                 complete predicate

 

Every sentence has a subject and predicate but they are not always easy to find, they are called Hard-to-Find Subjects.
